Three killed in Tunis and 28 others injured after clashes near the U.S. embassy

At least three people have been killed and 28 wounded in the attack on the US Embassy in Tunis, however, the American school in Tunis has been set on fire by protesters demonstrating against the America-made film deemed insulting to the Prophet Mohammed, citing Tunisian state television.

Angry Tunisian demonstrators, mostly from the Salafist group, have broken into the US embassy compound, breaking windows and setting fires. A large fire is burning inside the compound and black smoke clouds can be seen rising into the air, Reuters news reported.

The protesters also reportedly called out “Obama is a coward” and “the prophet Mohammed is above all", "no insults against the Prophet, not insults against Islam, not to terrorism", the crowd responded by chanting "Death to America".

Witness told AFP news that, Tunisian police and security forces fired teargas at hundreds of angry demonstrators, but could not prevent some from scaling the walls, smashing windows and lighting trees at the compound.

Riot police armed with batons and shields, fought against protesters who threw rocks and missiles, AFP correspondent said.

As for the American diplomats,Tunisia's official news agency reported that, the US ambassador to Tunisia has been evacuated from the embassy, following the attack as all stuff members are fine and no injuries have been reported.

On her part, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has condemned the film as "disgusting and reprehensible," adding that the US government had "absolutely nothing to do with (it)."

"The United States government had absolutely nothing to do with this video. We absolutely reject its content and message," Clinton said

"To us, to me personally, this video is disgusting and reprehensible. It appears to have a deeply cynical purpose: to denigrate a great religion and to provoke rage".

Opinion:

We note that the level of violence, in countries that witnessed the Arab Spring is extremely high. Maybe some of you went to Tunisia and saw the good hospitality of its people. Moreover, in Tunisia, the religious extremism is almost impossible there.

The appearance of the Salafist Group, after the revolution, is one of the negative developments on the Tunisian scene. This is a cause for concern and may the grace of God intervened and protected the embassy staff who, if the extremists were able to reach them, a massacre would have occured same as in Libya, a few days ago.

The Western countries have been hasty in supporting the Arab Spring, which until now did not provide the countries which experienced it anything except degradation and violence.

I am proud I am a Muslim and an Arab, at the same time I am sad for the situation that has made some people circulate that all Muslims are killers and terrorists. Therefore, I wish that the countries of the Arab spring would have transfered power of authority, away from the chaos and violence. However this violence succeeded one day to remove regimes, although the western countries knew previously that these regimes are dictatorial, but they still didn't mind dealing with them.
