NAGASAKI — About 6,780 residents in the city of Nagasaki were urged to prepare for evacuation Sunday as the rainy season greeted Kyushu with heavy thunderstorms and increased the risk of landslides.
In part of Nagasaki, 291 mm of rainfall was recorded during a 24-hour period through 10:10 a.m. — the most since 1991, when the Meteorological Agency started taking records.
The agency also issued warnings for possible lightning and tornadoes.
The landslides have already begun. In Minamishimabara, Nagasaki Prefecture, an 81-year-old man was injured when a hill behind his home slid around 15 meters and damaged his house, the police said.
In Kawaminami, Miyazaki Prefecture, 225 people from 67 households were urged to evacuate over potential landslides, the city said.
The heavy rain has caused the suspension of bullet trains in some areas, Kyushu Railway Co. said.
